Band 5: Articles Missing

"I am student."

"I like music." (intended: general)

Examiner: "Consistent article errors limit you to Band 5 GR"

Band 6: Articles Present

"I am a student."

"I like music." (Ø for general)

The Article System — Three Choices for IELTS

a / an

First mention, one of many

  • I use a textbook.
  • An IELTS exam is expensive.
  • She is a student.
  • He needs an umbrella.

Rule: a before consonant sound, an before vowel sound

the

Already mentioned, unique, known

  • The textbook is helpful. (already mentioned)
  • The exam is in March. (specific)
  • The library opens at 8. (known to both)
  • Turn left at the station. (unique)

Rule: both speaker and listener know which one

Ø (nothing)

General plural, uncountable

  • I like Ø books. (general)
  • Ø Information is online. (uncountable)
  • Ø Homework is important. (general)
  • She gives Ø advice. (uncountable)

Rule: general ideas, uncountable nouns, plural categories

Russian Trap: No Articles in Russian!

Every time you miss one, it's a Band 5 signal.

Consistent article errors = Band 5 for Grammar

The fix: Every noun needs a "partner" — a/an, the, or Ø

Russian: "Я студент."

English: "I am a student."

Russian: "Экзамен в марте."

English: "The exam is in March."

A. Speaking HW: Audio Recording + STT Self-Check

Task: Record a 1.5-minute answer: "Describe your ideal study space. What does it have? What is there? Why is it good for learning?"

Record your answer (1.5 min)
Model Answer (for comparison):
"My ideal study space is a quiet room with a large desk and a comfortable chair. The room has a window with a nice view, and there is a bookshelf on the wall. I have a lamp on the desk and my laptop. The walls are light blue, which helps me stay calm. There are no distractions because the room is far from the street. I think the best study space is one where you can focus for a long time without interruptions."
B. Writing HW: Describe Your City

Prompt: Describe your city to someone who has never visited. What places are there? What is the best restaurant? Is there a park or a museum? (120-150 words)
